Last Wednesday I teamed up with my best friend, Brooke Stamper, to deliver a short study we had prepared for our youth group. The topic was the same as this article and this will serve as us essentially putting our notes and observations into your hands. We have co-authored a few articles before which can be found here and here. For this particular study, we saw a society of youth, ourselves most certainly included, that were looking to the celebrities and famous people of this world to show us what kind of person we needed to be. We look at how they dress, how they talk, how they walk, even what diets they are going on. We try to imitate these people of influence and in doing so, we stray from the path that has been set before us by God. Basically we have become as a society of youth discontent with the way that we were created. We wish that we could be like the Kardashians and become angry at God for not making us “special”. In reality, the Bible clearly states that we are uniquely made with a purpose in mind and a path set before us. It is time for us to surrender to God’s will for our lives. To remain constant with our other co-authored posts, Brooke’s words will be italicized and my own will be in unaltered text throughout…
“We all know that one person; maybe even ourselves, who tries to fit in by changing to become a completely different person. Whether we are trying to become like a certain celebrity, or even just the cool kid at school, we aren’t seeking to become the person that God made us to be. Want to hear something really cool? The Father who knows the exact number of hairs on each of our head’s knew what we would be doing right this second before he even created us. So why are we trying to be like the celebrities and cool kids instead of becoming the person that God made us to be?”
Ephesians 2:10 – For we are his workmanship created In Christ Jesus for good works which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. “God’s word right here tells us that not only did God create us, but he already had a plan for us that he wants us to follow. Like the potter carefully molds his clay into a soup bowl, already knowing beforehand that the bowl will hold soup, in the same way God already knew what our purpose in life would be and He created us to fulfill that purpose.”
Jeremiah 29:11 – For I know the plans I have for you says the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. “In the last verse we saw that we have been created with a purpose already in mind. This verse tells us that the Lord has the blueprints to help us achieve this purpose already drawn up. We don’t need to look to the leaders of this world to figure out the way to live our lives. Instead God has given us his Word as a blueprint for us to follow.”
Romans 12:2 – Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is, His good, pleasing and perfect will. “As I said at the beginning, don’t try to be like other people. Instead strive to be more and more like Jesus every day. By renewing your mind, which is essentially constantly reading and seeking to understand God’s word, then we will be able to figure out what God’s will is for us and work harder and harder every day to do what He wants. God has us here for a reason and in order to know what that reason is, we must draw closer to Him.”
2 Corinthians 5:17 – Therefore if anyone is in Christ the new creation has come, the old is gone, the new is here. “As we said earlier, many of us look to celebrities or people of influence and think to ourselves how much we would like to be like those people. We are displeased with ourselves and are seeking to become that new person. In this verse we are told that when we enter into Christ, then we become a new creation.”
Psalm 139:14 – I will praise you for I am fearfully and wonderfully made, marvelous are your works and that my soul knows very well. “We need to give God all the glory and we need to thank Him every day for making us fearfully and wonderfully. We should also realize that He created us as one of a kind and we are not like anyone else will ever be. So why not embrace that and become the person that God made us to be!”
1 Timothy 4:12 – Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and purity. “A common misperception is that we can’t do anything for the Lord simply because we are young. We allow others to tell us that we should just enjoy our youth while we have it and that can lead to us straying from the path and doing some stupid things. Essentially, we aren’t being who God created us to be. Here though we are told that as youth we should be setting an example for others and living our lives to the fullest for God.”
In case you haven’t realized it yet, these verses all point towards being the person that God made you to be. We are each fearfully and wonderfully made in God’s own image with a path set before us and a purpose in mind. The Bible clearly tells us to not seek to become like those of this world, but to strive to become more like Jesus through the renewing of our minds so that even in our youth we may be a shining light to others.
There you have it folks. For those that weren’t able to hear us in person and would like a copy of the audio file, either Brooke or I can email it to you if you would be kind enough to give us your email address. Calvary Lake Ozark Youth don’t forget about the end of summer bash happening tomorrow at the Ruggeri’s. Hope to see everyone either there or at church on Sunday. God bless!
